On December 7th, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights hosted an online conference in cooperation with ADC Memorial to discuss migrant children´s rights in the context of return procedures in the region of East Europe and Central Asia. This event counted with the participation of child rights and human rights experts, representatives of international organizations, governmental representatives of Eastern European and Central Asian countries, Ombudsman as well as civil society. The panelists highlighted the importance of interstate cooperation and the need to include child rights standards into laws and practices that would replace the outdated Chisinau Agreement on the Return of Minor Children to Their Country of Origin. Manfred Nowak along with Renate Winter emphasized the need to ban children’s migration-related detention. Some of the panelists also took the opportunity to showcase some positive practices that are being developed in several countries. A more detailed description of the mentioned good practices will be incorporated into the Global Study Toolkit on Migration, that will be published in the beginning of next year.
