World Congress on Juvenile Justice (15th-18th November)

Within the framework of the World Congress on Juvenile Justice the Global Campus of Human Rights was involved as Regional Partner in several activities. Together with Terre des Hommes and the NGO Panel on Children Deprived of Liberty three regional workshops were organised to present the Child-friendly Animated Film of the Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty. After the stream of the Film, experts from different regions and young persons that have been deprived of liberty gave an overview on their experiences and necessary follow-up actions in the context of the African, European, and the MENA region.

Some of the main discussions revolved around the need to reduce the numbers of persons living in prison, the need to work on the principle of normalisation in prison making that life in prison resembles as much as possible to the life outside prison. Also the need to support children while they are deprived of liberty and after release was mentioned.

Here we give you an overview of the main speakers of the three regional workshops:

Regional workshop – Africa: Moderated by John Paul Amah, Chargé du Droits de l´Enfant, Global Campus of Human Rights. Main speakers: Evariste Meda, Procureur du Faso de Kongoussi, André Ouedraogo, Chef traditionnel and youth representatives Ali and Aidara, who have been in contact with the justice system.

Regional workshop – Europe: Moderated by Manfred Nowak, Secretary General of the Global Campus of Human Rights and Independent Expert of the Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty. Main speakers: Benoit Van Keirsbilck, Director of DCI Belgium and Member of the Committee on the Rights of the Child, Milica, 18-year-old who has experienced deprivation of liberty and Damien Hernon, Director of Oberstown Children Detention Campus.

Regional workshop – MENA: Moderated by Hala Kinawi, Child Rights Regional Officer at the Global Campus of Human Rights. Main speakers: Judge Suhair Tobaisi, Amman Appeals Court and Anas, Member of the World Congress Child and Youth Advisory Group.
